Do Surf Booties or Water Shoes Protect Against Stingrays?

Stingray sting simulation of traditional booties vs DragonSkin Achilles Heels

In addition to testing our own DragonSkin® booties against stingray stings, we’ve also run testing on traditional booties to better understand the degree of protection they provide. We’ve recreated a stingray sting with a real barb to see how the materials stood up. In our tests, Neoprene provided nearly no protection against a stingray sting. Denser materials on booties helped more, but the level of protection provided by most existing booties overall was not very high.

Even if the bootie isn’t specifically designed to protect you from stingrays, it will be better than wearing nothing. There are many booties out there and, although not designed specifically for stingray resistance, folks like Brian Chernicky have tested out some styles and shared their experiences.

We purpose-built DragonSkin® booties to be resistant to stingray stings. They're backed by our Money Back Guarantee, and we’ve put in a lot of effort to make sure they are comfortable, effective, and overall the best footwear to protect from stingrays. As far as we know, we’re the only team that has tested the resistance of booties to stingray stings.

You can get a pair of DragonSkin® Achilles Heels on our site, or on amazon! Both are backed by our Money Back Guarantee
