The Demand

If you've been stung by a stingray, you already know how much it hurts. We teach the stingray shuffle, we learn how to treat stingray stings, and instructors are afraid to even mention stingrays around kids, who may become too scared to get in the water. Everyone deals with stingray stings. Dr. Chris Lowe of the CSULB Shark Lab estimates lifeguards treat more than 10,000 stings a year in Southern California. Huntington Beach lifeguards estimate that their beach alone treats 3500 stings every year.
